The Devil Wears Prada is an American metal band formed in 2005 and they have been restless ever since. Now…six years later they have released their fourth album. Dead Throne makes you forget the ‘old’ The Devil Wears Prada and makes room for a more progressive contender in this rising genre.
On this album they could be compared to bands like As I lay Dying and maybe even In Flames. The guitars are very heavy; they incorporate technical metal drumming, a tight bass and powerful vocals. What is not to love about the new The Devil Wears Prada?
There is something to be said about how they chose the order of the tracks on the album and what kind of effect that sequence has got. A very heavy song like ‘Forever Decay’ would have been great as a first song of the album and the desperate sounding vocals on ‘Chicago,’ which is very nice in this case, would have made a beautiful ending to a good album.
But that is my only remark to a near flawless album by these young artists. The quality of every song is fairly consistent with some songs that really stand out. This is difficult to achieve on an album which has 14 songs. The songs that stand out the most are ‘Forever Decay’ and ‘Chicago.’ Those songs really bring something new to this genre.
‘Forever Decay’ is a song that would not look strange in a list containing heavy metal hits like ‘Take This Life’ by In Flames and ‘Nemesis’ by Arch Enemy. The song is structured to perfection and the blasts enhance the great vocals. Every instrument is played serving the song, but still has some technical high lights, especially in the drums.
‘Chicago’ is a completely different style of song; this also shows the diversity of this band. As said before the near-desperation heard in the vocals already makes this a great song. But it is done to an extent that does not make it sound like a whiney song. In this piece you can also hear how well piano fits with this style of music.
So Dead Throne is a very good album in the up and coming metal scene of screams combined with melodic vocals. Only slight changes in the order of songs could improve the otherwise great album. In my opinion this is an album that all metal fans should buy, because this is what we can expect of metal going forward. This is a band that we should keep our eye on.
